About the Vessel
Friesland was a second-rate ship of the line in the Dutch navy. She was built somewhere around 1663 to 1666 and mounted 78 guns. She took part in the Battle of Solebay of the Third Anglo-Dutch War.
Webmasters note:
This is a Mamoli kit that states the ship’s name is Friesland, that it mounted 80 guns, was built around 1663, and took part in the Battle of Solebay (1672). An internet search for the Battle of Solebay shows references to a 78-gun ship named Westfriesland, which may be the correct name.
Another internet source lists the following Dutch ships of the line with the name Friesland or Westfriesland:
- Westfriesland, 78 guns, 1666 (This ship is as described by the Mamoli kit, and is the only one built before the Battle of Solebay)
- Westfriesland, 90-94 guns 1682 (larger and built after the Battle of Solebay)
- Friesland, 62 guns, 1685 (smaller and built after the Battle of Solebay)
- Friesland (or Wapen van Friesland), 58 guns, 1694 (smaller and built after the Battle of Solebay)
- Friesland, 74 guns, 1783 (of similar size, but built after the Battle of Solebay)
- Westfriesland, 64 guns, 1783 (smaller and built after the Battle of Solebay)

Note: as of 27 Sep 2019, there is conflicting information on this site. It is listed as nominally 66 guns, but 78 (1673) and 80 (1873) are listed in detail. - Listing for the Battle of Solebay, from the same database
