On a square-rigged vessel, a topgallant sail (topgallant alone pronounced “t’gallant”, topgallant sail pronounced “t’garns’l”) is the sail or sails immediately above the topsail or topsails.
A topgallant may be separated into upper and lower sails, in order to make them less cumbersome to handle by small crews.
