« Back to Glossary Index

A polacca (or polacre) sailing vessel with 2 or 3 single-pole masts. Rigs varied, but the typical rig for a 3-masted vessel was lateen on the fore and mizen and square on the main. For fore mast was often canted forward to accommodate the long lateen yard. Two-masted vessels were usually square rigged on both masts. Compare to felucca (3 lateen sails) and polacre-xebec (square fore with lateen main and mizzen).
