Lapstrake is a method of hull planking originating in Scandinavia, in which the edges overlap one another. Compare to carvel hull planking.
It is a “hull first” method of hull construction, where the shape is determined by temporary templates over which the planks are formed. They are later reinforced by the insertion of timbers fitted to the planks. This is in contrast to “frame-first” carvel construction, where the shape is determined by the set of permanent frames onto which the planks are affixed.
