A brigantine is a sailing ship with two masts, the fore being rigged with square sails and the aft with a gaff mainsail and square topsails. It is differentiated from the brig, which has square mainsails on both masts and an additional gaff-rigged spanker behind the aft mainsail, and from the hermaphrodite brig, in which all sails on the mainmast are gaff-rigged.
