About the Vessel
SS United States is a retired ocean liner built in 1951 for the United States Lines.
She has held the records for highest average speed for an ocean liner crossing of the Atlantic (see Blue Riband), in both directions, since her maiden voyage in 1952.
She was designed by American naval architect William Francis Gibbs with the plan that she could be converted into a troopship if required by the Navy in time of war, though this never occurred. She provided passenger service until 1969 and is currently moored in Philadelphia, where a preservation group continues to consider various restoration plans.
