About the Vessel
Metunga was a wooden deadrise (a “V” bottom boat) oyster dredge built at the J. S. Darling Boat Yard of
Hampton, Virginia, in 1916. The Darling family, owners of METUNGA, also operated the Darling Oyster House, one of Virginia’s largest oyster firms at the time.
