About the Vessel

La Santa María was the largest of the three ships used by Christopher Columbus in his first voyage to the West Indies in 1492. The other two were the Niña and the Pinta.

Santa Maria went aground on Christmas Day, 1492, on the shores of Haiti. She was partially dismantled to obtain wood for Fort Navidad (Christmas Fort), the first Spanish settlement in the New World.
