About the Vessel
This model is of a lighter belonging to the New York Central Railroad. Generally speaking, “lighters” are vessels used to load and offload freight to and from larger ships, when the larger ships cannot access a pier.
Before there were tunnels, the Hudson River was a barrier between nearly all railway terminals and the deep-water ports of New York city. Lighters were relied on to carry freight between the railroad terminals and piers throughout New York and New jersey.
