About the Vessel
A flattie is a sloop-rigged, flat-bottom boat with some deadrise aft. Deadrise aft helps a heavy flat-bottom boat turn when sailing into the wind. They were used primarily for carrying produce on the Maryland and Virginia tidal streams, and to a lesser extent for oystering, crabbing, and duck hunting.
