About the Vessel
Niña was a Spanish caravel used repeatedly by explorer Christopher Columbus, including his first voyage to the West Indies in 1492.
Her true name was Santa Clara, a female saint’s name, which was typical of Spanish ships. But she was commonly known as La Niña (Spanish for little girl), which was likely a reference to her owner, Juan Niño of Moguer.
