The topgallant mast is attached to the top of the topmast on the forward side. Its shrouds run to the platform or crosstrees at the top of the topmast, rather than to the side of the hull. In a square-rigged vessel the sails carried by the yards supported by the topgallant mast are correspondingly called topgallants.
A staysail set on a stay running forward and downwards from the top or midpoint of the topgallant mast is called a topgallant staysail.
